a little culture

Tonight, Tony & I attended a Claflin Hill symphony concert with friends. We all have season tickets, and this is the 2nd of 4 concerts for this year. The first of the season was the Holiday Pops in December. This one tonight was "American Originals", with music by Aaron Copland, George Gershwin, Roy Harris and Leonard Bernstein. Now, I like some of Copland's music, particularly "Appalachian Spring" and "Grand Canyon Suite" (but those weren't selected for tonight's performance), some of Bernstein and lots of Gershwin. I'd never heard of Roy Harris until tonight, and now I know why...it's not WGBH or WCRB fare. The only piece that we enjoyed (the others were too dissonant for our ears) was the Bernstein "Symphonic Dances from West Side Story". The next concert, in March, will be Gilbert and Sullivan's "Pirates of Pensance". That will be lighter fare...
Some of the musicians here also play with Hartford and Boston Symphony Orchestras. We are fortunate to have such a fine venue close by, traveling to Boston would not be met with great enthusiasm.
Two music teachers from our school district (Henry Morel and his son, Michael who is middle school music director, play in the percussion section. Percussion has a great workout tonight. It was fun watching them, but I think they must have been exhausted when this performance was over.
