Adriana has been with us since Thursday, she had no school on Thursday or Friday due to staff convention meetings. By the way, she's now a student at a private academy in Putnam...Chris and David have been hard-put to keep up with the cafe and recognized that they weren't able to give the time needed to her home-schooling. The way their demands are growing, time wasn't improving. Upon evaluation by the staff at the academy, she was placed in 4th grade...just where she should be. She's happier, too, as she was feeling that she was spending 'all my time alone in the cafe schoolroom while mom was baking', (even tho' that wasn't true, it was her perspective).
So we have had a grandmother/granddaughter treat. On Thursday afternoon, she and I went to the fabric store so that she could select fabric for her new purse. Since she has watched her aunts, sister, cousins and mother receive a Grammy-made handbag, she has been wanting one of her own. So this weekend is her turn. She found some very pretty blue and purple prints. I cut it out and she sewed on Thursday nite, finished just about 1/2 of the bag. She has been my helper all the way...stitching, pressing, turning, and admiring. I did the cutting (no rotary cutter for her, yet...I don't want to risk missing fingers). I did stitch only the most difficult areas. We finished it on Friday nite. She made a matching cell-phone bag, all of it by herself.
On Friday morning, she and I boarded the train for a trip to Boston. It was supposed to be for a trip to the Children's Museum, but when we checked the website, she decided that the exhibits were for young children, that she'd rather go to the science museum. That is where we went. Train to Boston, subway to Science Park, walk across two busy city streets, then into the Boston Science Museum. We saw sooooo much, including the Harry Potter exhibit, space ships, dinosaurs (full-size models), nature exhibits, etc. This was so worthwhile. She wants to go back again so Giulia can see it, too.

On Halloween the 3 children (A, K and C), Christina and I walked the full length of our street for Trick or Treating. Katherine had sewn her own costume (Dorothy from Wizard of Oz) and Adriana had helped sew hers (Alice in Wonderland). Many of the houses (about half) to which we visited had simply placed a pot of candy on their front steps, no one to greet the children at the door. In some cases the occupants were at home. Of course, many of the pots were already empty. Katherine declared that she'd "worked hard on her costume and wanted people to see it!" Our weather was perfect (notice no coats) and the children still had a good time, whistling all the way home to keep the "ding-bats" away.

Halloween and Trick-or-treating have changed soooo much since we were kids. Some people are afraid to open their doors, especially in the evening. That's one reason why we have gone to either church festivals or home-based parties on Halloween. Besides the fact that we can eliminate the gross/freaky/horror element, ( love the girls' costumes!), the kids get to share their costumes and fun with a group of friends!
I agree...but we're talking just neighbors on our street...we all know each other. Besides, I don't think we get kids from anywhere else...dad distributed just 12 bags of peanuts this year. Frankly, I'd like to see Halloween disappear altogether...the retail aspect has gotten out of hand.
